live through this, and you won’t look back
Okay, first of all — it’s a business decision and Eduardo is fiscally conservative, so I’m not surprised that it happened. Secondly, he’s under no obligation to stay in the United States. He wasn’t born here, he didn’t come to the US just for his college education, and besides, Americans do not have a monopoly on the Ivy League or any college, for that matter. I have many friends from foreign countries who attend school in the US and I don’t think they should be obliged to stay here afterwards in any way. We are all citizens of the world above all else, in my mind, him more than most, and education is education. Thirdly, he lives in Singapore and has been paying US taxes for a while because of how our tax law works and he paid for his Harvard tuition, so I don’t see him as shirking his responsibility in that regard. I wish he did better things with his money (and I hope he pays his capital gains tax), but I don’t have any say in that and sadly it is none of my business.
Aside from that, though, it’s an interesting move because it’s such an old money, old business move and it further highlights the difference between Mark and Eduardo’s approaches to business. For me, I feel like amysnakehole wrote an excellent fic dealing with this on the kinkmeme a while ago (which is here) and it’s something that I’ll probably be working into any fics that take place around the present because it creates interesting drama.
