in the middle of an ordinary life
Andrew/Jesse, PG-13. 8,874 words.
Once in a while, in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairytale.
“Who’s Andrew?” asks Emma, peering over his shoulder at the post-it he had stuck to the casing of his computer.
“Some guy I hit on the 405 today,” says Jesse, hitting the spacebar on his keyboard with more emphasis than was necessary.
“You hit a guy on the 405 and then got his number? Only you,” says Emma.
“What are you even talking about?” demands Jesse. “It’s not like I’m devastatingly attractive. I fully expected him to sue me.”
“You’re devastatingly adorable,” says Emma. “No one can stay mad at you. They take one look at your dimples and fold into a pile of mush.”

Erica sat across from Dustin on the train. His hair looked very red in the sunlight slanting through the window. She couldn’t stop playing with the mockingjay pin Tori had pressed into her hands; it caught the light and reflected it into Dustin’s eyes.
“What is that?” he asked, nodding towards her hands. She held it out for him to see. “That’s your token?”
“That’s what — yes,” she said, rubbing her thumb over the edge. “I don’t know why Tori gave this to me.”
“Mockingjays —” Dustin shrugged. “They’re seen as a sign of resistance to the Capitol. Maybe she thought it would give you strength.”
Erica said, “Maybe,” and didn’t tell him what Tori had whispered in her ear when they hugged.
“I think we finally have a chance with you,” Tori had breathed, barely loud enough to hear. “Trust only the mockingjays, Erica. Keep an eye out.”
Erica still didn’t understand what she had meant, but she kept the pin anyway, in hopes that it would become clear eventually. She toyed with it for a moment, then carefully pinned it to her shirt. Sean, who was walking towards them with Gretchen, paused when she moved her hands away.
“What is that?” he asked, eyebrows raised.
“It’s a mockingjay pin,” Erica said. “Tori gave it to me.”
Sean’s expression abruptly became inscrutable. “She did?” He and Gretchen exchanged significant glances, and then Sean smiled. “Well, it’s very pretty, don’t you think, Gretchen?”
Erica looked over at Dustin while Sean and Gretchen exchanged inane prattle and gave him a tiny, resigned smile. After a moment, he smiled back; then he turned to look back out the window.
